Three. Two. One. We Have Ingition.

October 30, 2012 in BOFF 2, Book Launch, Celebration, Community News by JM Strother

Today marks the launch of the Best of Friday Flash – Volume Two, or BOFF 2 as it is affectionately known around here. BOFF 2 is a collection of some of the best flash fiction to be found on the web and we are happy to see its release to the wild. To join in on the fun attend the official launch party on Facebook.

On this auspicious occasion we here at Friday Flash Dot Org want to take a moment to thank all the people who made this event possible.

A stack of Best of Friday Flash - Volume Two

First and foremost we thank the writers who answered our call for submissions. Unfortunately not everyone who submitted was accepted, and some very worthy candidates were, by necessity, not picked up. I know and admire folks we had to turn down. I count some of them as personal friends. For me, as one of the Editors, the single hardest thing to do was sending out those letters of regret. But deserving stories will find a home, of that I am sure. The only thing that made it bearable was the fact that the stories that did make it into this terrific collection were selected by a blind panel of judges. In the end we wound up with a fine collection of stories which does a wonderful job of showcasing the diverse talent which makes the #FridayFlash community so vibrant and alive.

Which brings us to the next group we need to thank, our blind panel of judges.

This year we used Submittable (formerly Submishmash) which allowed us to operate the entire submission and selection process blind, i.e. the judges did not see the author’s names when doing their evaluations. While not perfect (unlike me, some judges probably have very good memories) this ensured the most fair process we could manage for story selection. We want to thank all the judges for their diligent and fair-minded efforts.

The editing burden this year was a shared effort. On a personal note I want to thank my co-editors, Tony Noland and Rachel Blackbirdsong, for their assistance in putting it all together. Since we had three editors this year, we have three stories selected as Editor’s Choice picks. Congratulations to TS Bazelli for “Quick Draw,” Mike Robertson for “Ice Boat,” and Kevin J. Mackey for “Intimate Strangers.” Your stories are exemplars of the breadth and depth this community captures every week in 1000 words or less. Amazing work, every one.

As always, we want to thank our readers. Your encouragement, comments, and critiques week in and week out are invaluable. We also thank you for picking our Reader’s Choice Award, “Running Away,” by Cathy Olliffe-Webster. Congratulations, Cathy.

Finally, we want to thank our publisher, eMergent Publishing, and Jodi Cleghorn in particular. She helped shepherd the book through the entire process, gave timely and sage advice, a shoulder to lean on when most needed, and even designed the cover. It was pure pleasure working with Jodi, and eMergent Publishing. Jodi, we are proud to bear your imprint.

You can see the full Table of Contents of BOFF 2 at the eMergent website, where you can also purchase a copy (or two) for your very own.

And don’t forget the party on Facebook. Drop by and say hello, have an hors d’oeuvre, or glass of punch (careful, I’ve heard it’s spiked), and then go out and help spread the word. And thank you all again for participating in #FridayFlash.

From the desk of Jodi Cleghorn…

The Best of Friday Flash: Volume 2 is rolling off the presses in three different countries in anticipation of next week’s release. I’m looking forward to taking the first shipment later on this week in Brisbane.

Release Day
Next Tuesday (30th of October) is release day. I’ve prepared a launch pack to assist in promoting the anthology. The promo material can be downloaded here.

An online party is organized at Facebook. Please join the guest list and encourage friends and family to join in also. We’ll have giveaways throughout the day.

Pre-Orders and Post-Release Sales
For those who have pre-ordered copies of the anthology, thank you! We are aiming to have them to you before the launch. For those of you who haven’t pre-ordered, we encourage you to put your order through now. The Best of Friday Flash page has more information on how you can order.

We are waiting for Amazon and other online retailers to pick up the anthology, however we are encouraging people, where possible, to purchase through the eP bookstore. This allows all book profits to be reinvested back into the community (rather than being shared with Amazon!)

The e-book will be available from the eP bookstore as of 9am Tuesday (Australian Eastern Standard Time) in three different file formats.

If anyone has any questions or requires any additional information please feel free to get in contact with me

Best of Friday Flash: Volume Two Update

September 21, 2012 in BOFF 2, eMergent Publishing, Friday Flash by Jodi Cleghorn

Three years ago two great things happened to me as a writer and publisher: Twitter and #FridayFlash. Many of the authors I worked with in 2010 came direct from the Friday Flash community and the trend has continued. It is an honour  to have the opportunity to give something back to this community. Now I ask you to throw your support behind The Best of Friday Flash: Volume Two.

In late 2009 J.M Strother launched the #fridayflash hashtag on Twitter and a new writing community was born. The hashtag has grown into a vibrant and thriving writing and reading community who embrace new, emerging and established writers across the globe every week in celebration of the flash fiction form. The Best of Friday Flash: Volume Two brims with a second helping of poignant, uplifting, brutal, funny, melancholic and twisted snapshots of life: past, present and future.

This second collection contains 57 amazing flash fiction pieces, in what Dan Powell calls in his foreword, a snapshot in itself of the Friday Flash community. A full table of contents can be found at the bottom of the sales page.

The book is scheduled for release Tuesday 23rd October.

The eMergent Bookstore is open now to accept pre-orders of the paperback (paperback $9.99 or £4.99 plus postage). The eBook, available as of the 23rd, is priced at $2.99. All paperback purchases are automatically bundled with an eBook, so you never have to be too far away from your favourite pieces of flash. Pre-ordering legends will have the eBook links emailed to them on release day.

The paperbacks and eBooks will also be available through the usual distribution outlets, such as Amazon, though we encourage people to buy direct through the eP bookstore so the greatest share of the book’s profit return to the Friday Flash community for reinvestment. Paperbacks bought through third party sellers are also not eligible for the eBook bundle.

All contributing authors will receive an information/promotional package in the coming weeks to assist them with the promotion of the book. We invite all Friday Flash authors and readers, and their friends, family and colleagues to join/share/participate in the Worldwide launch at the Facebook Event page.

As a final taster, we have ARCs for two lucky Friday Flash members. To go into the draw simply leave a short comment and let us know how being part of the Friday Flash community has helped you as a writer!

BOFF 2 Is On the Way

September 13, 2012 in BOFF 2, Community News, Cover Art by JM Strother

Jon Strother holding two copies of the BOFF 2 ARCsWe want to take a moment to thank all of you who took the time to vote on the BOFF 2 cover. Your votes were counted, your voices listened to, and your time and effort very much appreciated. If you did not catch it in Estrella’s News Flash, you can see in the picture to the right, the color selected by the community is blue. I am holding two of the ARCs in my hot little hands which, coincidentally, arrived on my birthday. One of the best birthday presents I have ever had. I have to tell you it looks fabulous up close and personal in actual print.

Jodi Cleghorn, of Emergent Publishing, will have a more detailed post for you next week to include the expected release date, pricing, and some sample promotional material you all can use to help spread the word. As of now the ARCs are being reviewed by multiple sets of eyes to find any last minute errors before the final version is sent of to the printers. But rest assured, it will not be much longer before the Best of Friday Flash – Volume 2 becomes an in-your-hands reality.

Thank you all once again for participating in #FridayFlash.

BOFF 2 Cover Color Poll

August 28, 2012 in BOFF 2, Cover Art, Poll by JM Strother

Friday Flash has always been about a community of writers (and the awesome flash fiction they write). As such we are throwing the final say on the cover of Best of Friday Flash: Volume Two to you.

We’ve chosen a design that we hope will brand the collection, and over time, become instantly associated with #FridayFlash, the amazing writing done by this community and the anthologies created to show case that talent.

How can you be involved?

It’s easy, just vote for one of the five colours shown here. Voting will be open for a week and the system will allow you to lodge one vote. The cover of The Best of Friday Flash: Volume Two will be decided by the colour with the highest number of votes.

Once this happens, we’ll let you know more about launch dates and how you can be involved.

The Good, The Bad, and the Exciting

March 15, 2012 in BOFF 2, Community News, eMergent Publishing, Friday Flash by JM Strother

Three hot air balloons being filled. It has been some time since the last update on BOFF 2, but rest assured we are getting closer to a launch all the time. As an editor, I have been less than great at keeping everyone informed on how things are developing, so all participants have every right to think I am just full of hot air. Hopefully, this post will help make amends for past shortcomings.

The Good
We will be sending out emails shortly to all the authors who have made the cut. All stories were selected after careful consideration from a pool of anonymous entries. While not perfect, it was the most fair method I could imagine. Thanks to all the judges who performed this difficult task. Without you, there would be no BOFF 2.

The Bad
We will also be sending out emails to all the authors who did not make the cut. For me, as Editor, this is the hardest part of the job. I will have to send emails to folks I have come to know over time, many of whom I regard as friends, and let them know the bad news. The only thing that makes it bearable is the fact that the stories were judged blind. Still, judging is subjective. Just because one story got a higher score than another does not necessarily mean the one was better than the other. You may have simply gotten judges that did not particularly like your genre. Or one who had just read another similar story, so the concept no longer felt fresh in their minds. Please do not take “No” as a failure. It is not. It is simply a set back. Your story will likely easily find another venue.

The Exciting
We will also be including a proposal to the authors who made the cut in the acceptance email, probably as an attachment. We have had a very generous offer from a publisher, one many of you will be familiar with, to do the typesetting, cover, production, and distribution of both the ebook and print versions. That’s right, we have the opportunity to have the BOFF 2 published with an actual imprint, that of eMergent Publishing. Regular participants may know the publishers of eMergent, Jodi Cleghorn and Paul Anderson. Both are members of the #FridayFlash community, and some of you have even been published through them previously. I have as well.

When I first set up #FridayFlash, we had to come up with a name. That quest lead me to Jodi Cleghorn, who I described at the time as “a lovely soul.” She has proved this once again, along with Paul, via their very kind offer. In short, eMergent is allowing the #FridayFlash community to publish through them at minimal cost as one of their community projects – i.e. a public service. Full details will be included in the forthcoming email.

To move forward on this, we simply need buy in from our authors. So read over the email when you get it and let us know if you are in or out. No response will indicate a decline, and we will not be able to include you. I sincerely hope you will all buy in, and we look forward to taking the #FridayFlash community a little higher in the world of publishing. We sincerely want to help you soar.

What Ever Happened to BOFF 2?

December 29, 2011 in BOFF 2, Community News, Friday Flash, Notices by JM Strother

The youngest black hole knownOne of the most frustrating things a writer faces is sending a submission off into a black hole, never getting a response, not knowing what the heck is going on. Unfortunately BOFF 2 has become something of a black hole for all of you who have submitted. It is well overdue and we are sure the frustration level on your part has to be approaching the limit. We apologize for being so unresponsive and will try to set things straight in this post.

We had 82 submissions in all for BOFF 2. Our initial plan was to have 52 stories chosen from the general submissions to represent one story for each week of a year, the reader’s choice story, and then up to three editor’s choice stories as we have three editors. If you do the math that means a total of 56 stories possible, meaning 26 stories will not make it. We thought one round of judging would bring enough clarity to the situation that we would be able to make those 56 selections without too much trouble. However, after the initial round of judging, wherein every story received three votes, we found that there were only a few stories that had clear cut results, meaning about two-thirds were still a muddle our my minds.

We also had to work around the fact that the submission manager we are using decided that the free account could only have five staff members. Since we have three editors that left room for two judges, which slowed things down, as we had to juggle judges in and out to get three votes on each story. As a result things pretty well bogged down into a state of angst and indecision, at least on my part.

Hopefully that is now all behind us. We have decided to take the stories with 3 positive votes forward and then subject the remainder to another round of judging in hopes that will bring further clarity to the situation. As a result BOFF 2 is now making forward progress again. Additional judges have been recruited and they are now working their way through the stories. As before they will have to be juggled in and out, but the judging process should be completed within a month. We hope we can have the whole project wrapped up by the end of the first quarter of 2012 (end of March, early April time frame).

If after reading all this you have decided you’ve had enough of my bungling around and you wish to withdraw your story we certainly understand. You may be able to find a better home for it elsewhere. If you decide you want to stick with the BOFF we sincerely thank you, and hope we can make your wait worthwhile. Please feel free to use the comments below to ask for further clarification, offer moral support, or simply vent.

We here at FFDO wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year, and great success on the publication front. Keep on writing.

The #FridayFlash Report – Vol 3 Numbers 17 & 18

October 3, 2011 in BOFF 2, Contests, FridayFlash Report by JM Strother

We have a double dose of stories to report this week, with 94 stories total, including four debuts. Please welcome Benjamin J Newland, Peter Newman, LadyJai, John Ross Barnes to the Friday Flash community. Welcome aboard, all.

I missed doing a wrap up last week, so this listing reflects two weeks worth of stories. And even this is a little late because I spent the weekend at Archon, the St. Louis science fiction convention. I got to hawk FridayFlash a couple of times, so maybe we’ll pick up a few more readers and/or participants from it. At any rate I had a blast and will share some of what I came away with in the near future.

If your story is not in the listing please be sure to visit the Collector and add the details. We’ll make sure it’s in next week’s report. Don’t forget we have a great Halloween writing contest coming up. Start researching those horror movie titles now. You can’t just expect them to come flying in though the rear window now, can you?

Thank you for participating. It is an honor to be associated with you all. ~jon

p.s. Look for some news about BOFF 2 soon. ~jon Read the rest of this entry →

BOFF2, Pet Contest, and Incentive

September 9, 2011 in BOFF 2, Contests by E. D. Johnson

BOFF 2

Jon assigned me 39 more BOFF2 stories to read, so I want to attend to those as quickly as possible. Thus, today’s post will be relatively short. If I can finish these stories, that has to mean we will be one step closer to the BOFF2 being done. Naturally, we all want that.

Pet Contest

The Pet Contest is in the voting stage, and that means we need everyone voting. We are testing out a method of voting that we may wish to implement in future contests, the next of which will begin soon. Thus far, only one person that did not participate in the contest has voted. With that said, everyone should vote now by clicking here.

Incentive

Anyone that votes in the next twenty-four hours will be eligible for a special prize. I will randomly select a voter and contact them for a highlight feature here on FFDO on September 30th. That is a Friday, so almost everyone in the #FridayFlash community will visit that day and see your highlight.

The #FridayFlash Report – Vol2. #52

June 2, 2011 in BOFF 2, Community News, FridayFlash Report, Notices, Submission Guidelines by JM Strother

Wow, has it been two full years already? This week marks the end of year two. Next week we start it all over again with The Friday Flash Report — Vol 3, and you know where that will likely lead. We closed out the year in fine form with 66 stories and 5 debuts this week. Our debut participants are Dominic Perry, Stacey Larner, Matthew S Williams, Timothy Collard, and Syd Gill. Please give them a warm welcome to the Friday Flash community.

This is the last week you can enter a story for consideration in the Best of Friday Flash – Volume Two. Any story presented as a Friday Flash from the beginning up to and including the ones in this report are eligible for consideration (except if they were in BOFF 1, of course). So if you have not done so already visit the submission guidelines and get that story in before midnight tomorrow night! (Yes, I still need to submit my own – I put the “pro” in procrastination).

As usual, if your story is not in the week’s listing it will be included next week if you visit the Collector and add the details. Speaking of the Collector, you may want to check out my previous post, Heads Up. Someone is obviously using zombie computers to spam the Collector and you may want to see if your computer matches one of the profiles. If so, please take corrective action. I’d hate to have to ban anyone.

I heard from several sources last week that we made the London Evening Standard. Be sure to check out Twitter Inspires Flash of Genius by my new most  favorite journalist in the world, Jasmine Gardner. Yes, if you couldn’t tell, I am a little pleased. Be sure to check out the community news below the listings for more news. If one of the entries looks vaugely familiar, we’ll…

Thanks again to everyone who helps make Friday Flash a weekly success.
