As you may have read, Tim VanSant is FFDO’s new Friday Flash Report Editor. Hope you will congratulate him, and also thank Jon Strother for all his hard work with the Report ever since our #fridayflash community was created.

On that note, we would like everyone to start using the new Friday Flash collector Tim has developed, instead of the old one on Mad Utopia. You will find the link to it at all times, at the very top of our right hand column here on FFDO. You can read more about it here. And on that note: if you have a link to the collector on your blog/website, you should update it with the new link. Thank you!

A blow up Frankenstein monster in a back yard. Thanks to everyone who dropped by #AmWriting this week to read my Name That Horror Movie Contest preview story, “Lady In White.” I had a lot of fun with it and I think my readers did too. That’s really the point, having fun around Halloween.

One unexpected twist for me was the sheer number of horror movie titles that were in my story. It really added to my enjoyment to discover one after another, many I had never even heard of before. Seems I have some movie watching to catch up on.

One issue that did come up is that with the open-ended nature of this contest it may be darn near impossible for readers to guess your movie title. To avoid reader frustration I have a few suggestions.

  • Unless it is painfully obvious try to keep the words of your title together in your story. I did that in “Lady In White” – the movie title was “Rear Window.” The important line came near the end, when I figured the reader would be more engrossed in the story than in hunting for a title. “The woman in white screamed again and Randy bolted down the corridor, straight through the rear window, taking panes, frames, and draperies with him.”
  • Try to avoid single word titles, as there are so many of those out there nearly any word in the story is a likely guess. If you do use a single word title it might be sporting to let your readers know that up front in order to narrow down the likely candidates a bit. Not using my own advice, my earlier preview story “Room With a View” is woven around a single word title. So far no one has guessed it.
  • You may want to offer hints. You can do this right up front to give everyone an even chance, or offer some hints later if it seems your readers are completely awash. For “Lady In White” I ended up giving two hints before someone successfully guessed the answer. As to “Room With a View,” the same hints I gave for “Lady In White” apply. It may be more often considered a suspense movie, and the phrase, “Good Evening” might come to mind.

These are all just suggestions to give your readers a better chance of connecting with the ball (hey, it’s World Series time – I had to work a baseball metaphor in somehow – Go Cards!). If your story is already written don’t feel like you need to change a thing. But if it seems like you’ve completely stumped your readers have mercy on them and offer up a hint or two. Remember, even though there is a nice prize pack associated with the contest the point isn’t so much winning as it is to have fun, for both readers and writers alike.

Photo by Paul Stang of a man and two women seated on grassMuch of the activity here are Friday Flash Dot Org revolves around groups, or at least that is the way it is supposed to work. Most of the groups here have been pretty quite. I think this is caused by a combination of people not realizing they are there and people not knowing how they work. To help remedy this situation we are going to announce a contest soon which will revolve around a couple of groups. I’ll leave the announcement up to Estrella and don’t want to steal any of her thunder, so I’ll leave it at that, just sort of a heads-up.

Because groups are about to become more important I thought it would be a good idea to remind people of how they work. Any member of Friday Flash Dot Org can start one, and mark it public or private. If you mark it public anyone can join. If you mark it private then anyone can request membership and it will be up to you as the group administrator to approve or deny access. We get our share of spammers that try to infiltrate here, so don’t feel bad about sitting on a request for a while until you can check the person out. I just canned a spammer a few minutes ago as a matter of fact.

I’m in several groups including Criticize Me, GoodReads, and Speculative Authors.

We started the Criticize Me group as a direct response to ED Johnson’s introductory post asking you the members for suggestions on what FFDO can do for you. More in depth criticism was the single most requested feature. The group is now open, so feel free to join and contribute. I have a story in Criticize Me right now awaiting critique. Please have at it. Together we can make each other stronger.

Tim VanSant started the GoodReads group as a place for people who are in the GoodReads social network to also connect here. If you are a member of GoodReads pop on in and say hello. You might pick up a few new followers.

Speculative Authors is a group started by Anna Harte. She describes it as a group “for authors who love speculative fiction (fantasy, scifi, horror, etc) — and for those speculating whether they should be an author.” Drop in on us some time and tell us what you’re speculating about. You’ll recognize almost everyone in there and we don’t bite (at least if the moon’s not full).

The point is, start using these groups. Learn how they work. Start having fun with them. Then when Estrella makes her announcement you won’t be caught flat-footed wondering how to participate.

One other thing. There is a group called Contributors that I started before I really understood how groups worked. Now that we understand groups, we will probably delete the existing Contributors group and relaunch it in the near future with a much more clear goal in mind. Sounds mysterious, doesn’t it? If you have any reason for Contributors not to be reset, let me know and well work something out.

So, what groups are you in and how do you intend to use them?

ED Johnson is away today. Look for his regular column here next week.

A group of men and women outside a building inNorwayLater this week ED Johnson will announce some new features here at Friday Flash Dot Org. Last week he asked for ideas on how we can better serve the community and you all had some great suggestions. We will try to  fulfill some of your requests as we can, and will roll them out over time. We promise not to bombard you with too many changes/enhancements all at once so you have time to learn and absorb each one as they make an appearance.

I don’t want to steal ED’s thunder, so I won’t tell you any more about what is coming, but I do want to key you in on how you can best take advantage of these new features.

FFDO is built on WordPress in conjunction with BuddyPress. BuddyPress is an open-source community support system which allows organizations to build custom environments for their users. That is what we are trying to do here. Much of the BuddyPress magic revolves around the concept of Groups. Groups are simply that, groups of users clustered around a central theme. Groups are not forums, though a group can have a forum. Confused yet? It’s not bad, really.

Groups can be set up to be Public, Private, or Hidden, each with their own features and privacy settings. The BuddyPress site explains the privacy setting for groups as follows:

  • Public groups are visible in all group directories. The contents of the group – activity updates, forum posts, and any additional group functionality you might add through plugins – is publicly accessible. Anyone in your BuddyPress community can join a Public group.
  • Private groups are also visible in group directories. The group name and group description remain available for all to see. However, the contents of the group are accessible only to members. Moreover, group membership is controlled: members of your broader BuddyPress community must request membership, which can only be granted by a group administrator.
  • Hidden groups are invisible to non-members. These group names and descriptions are not listed in site-wide directories, and their contents are accessible only to members of the group. Because the group is unlisted, users cannot request membership. Instead, individuals can only join the group by invitation.

Here at FFDO only Admin groups will be allowed to be hidden. You, as members, are free to set up public and private groups to your heart’s content. Keep in mind that Admins will be able to visit private groups even if we are not invited. If things start to get out of hand we’ll let you know. This is such a great community we really don’t expect many problems.

The new services we intend to roll out in the very new future are going to be based on Private Groups. That means in order for you to get into them you will have to take the initiative and ask for an invite. Then the group administrator will grant you access. This means things you post are not available over the broader Internet. So should you happen to post a story, poem or article you don’t need to worry about the “previously published” dilemma. It also means spammers and hackers will not be active in our group activities.

So how do I request this invite, you ask.

When ED announces the new service just click on the Groups tab on the front page to see a list of available groups. If you are sufficiently interested click on the group title.  This will send a notification to the group administrator who will in turn approve your membership. Once you are approved you will be able to participate fully.

This may all seem somewhat cumbersome, but it is the best way we know to allow us to have a safe and secure environment for us all to interact and help each other grow as writers. And that, my friends, is what it’s all about.

We had 56 stories this week including 1 debut. Please welcome Annie O’Connor to Friday Flash. I hope you find it to your liking, Annie. We are a very supportive (and fun) group.

It has been a busy week here at FFDO. We introduced our new Editor, ED Johnson on Monday. We rolled out News Flash, by Estrella Azul, as a regular weekly feature on Tuesday. Be sure to look for it each Tuesday, and keep those news items coming in to Estrella. We will happily share your joy. Then on Friday ED stirred things up with his first post, The Future of #FridayFlash.

Last time I looked that post had 40 great comments. We are looking for ways to improve FFDO to better serve the Friday Flash community, so if you have not added your two cents drop in on ED and have your say. We already have plans to implement several of the things people have suggested. Friday Flash has grown organically over time, and we will continue to evolve here at FFDO to reflect the needs and desires of the community. What would we be without you?

I am trying to stick to a more firm schedule, so if I caught you off guard by posting this while it is still technically the weekend (at least in some parts of the world) I apologize. But it’s never too late. Just add your details to the Collector and we’ll include your story in next week’s listing. And look for some new and exciting services here at FFDO in the near future. ~jon

Fireworks from the WhitehouseIt’s July 4th. Here in the States that means Independence Day, which marked the birth of a new nation. It is also Independence Day for the Philippines and the day, in 1817, that work began on the Erie Canal. In short July 4th is a great day to celebrate new beginnings.

So it is here at Friday Flash Dot Org. Today, I have the pleasure to announce that long time member of the Friday Flash community, E. D. Johnson, is taking up the reins as Editor. Last week, Olivia Tejeda informed me that she wished to step down for personal reasons. E. D. was already working for Olivia and FFDO behind the scenes, so I asked him if he would be willing to step in to fill the position.

So please welcome E. D. Johnson as the Dot Org Editor. I am giving him broad editorial control of the front page, but I am sure he would appreciate all the help he can get from the community at large. If you have any ideas you would like to share with him please feel free. He will be making a short post later this week introducing himself and outlining his plans for the future.

The 4th of July seems to be an auspicious date in the publishing world as well. Nathaniel Hawthorn was born on this date. Both Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass” and Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland” first made print on the 4th of July. And it was on July 4th that Henry David Thoreau moved to Walden Pond.

This seems like a great date to launch into a new regime here at Dot Org. I hope E. D. enjoys his stint as Editor. I am sure you all will do your best to help make it a successful one.

Welcome aboard, Edge.

UPDATE: Gallery Open, But Not As A Contest

We’re writers. We’re nosy. I mean snoopy. Okay, naturally curious.

Want to see each other’s personal writing space – with the added bonus of not having your camera confiscated when security finds you in your fellow writer’s Azalea bush under their window?

Well now you can share the site of your inspiration on the new “My Personal Writing Space” Gallery on Facebook. All you have to do, is upload a photo to the “My Personal Writing Space” album on the #fridayflash Group Page.

We’re looking for photos of where you do your thinking, writing, outlining, research, thumping of head against the desk (either yours or of those who dare disturb the writing process – just make sure to wipe off any blood stains) ;-)

The gallery is open to all, both readers and writers of #FridayFlash. We’ve had to yank the contest, since it apparently violates the Facebook terms of service. It was simply intended to generate interest and interaction on the Facebook Group Page. An open gallery will probably serve the same purpose. To make amends we will send a coupon code for the ebook of the Best of Friday Flash – Volume One to everyone who posted in good faith.

We’d still love to see your photos. Now… what are you waiting for? Get uploading!

Light bulb graphic from MS Word clip art.Friday Flash Dot Org seems to be off to a good start. While things have been pretty quiet on the front page, rest assured the back burners are cooking up a full head of steam. We have some definite thoughts on where we want to go with FFDO, but we also want to know what you, the members of the Friday Flash community, would like us to do. Many of you have become members here at FFDO. That is not, and never will be, a requirement for participation. Nor will membership ever cost you anything. But we do want becoming a member of the site to have some tangible benefits. So you tell us, what would you like to see that membership get you? Some of the things we already have in various stages of development are an improved Collector which will be database driven, guest posts, member spotlights, and some form of cooperative marketing for published members. Add your bright ideas to the comments below, or DM @FridayFlash on Twitter.

Friday Flash Dot Org is off to a great start. We’ve cleaned up the masthead, added lots of hooks to social media in the sidebar, set up networked blogs, and re-energized our presence on Facebook. Almost all of this is happening because of the tremendous energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers who have stepped up to make FFDO a success. Please allow me to introduce you to our terrific crew.

The Front Office
Olivia Tejeda is our new Content Editor. She will be managing the posts on the front page. She is looking for guest bloggers who would like to contribute articles on diverse topics relevant to the community at large. You can contact Olivia by email Olivia.Tejeda@fridayflash.org or via Twitter if you would like to contribute a post

Estrella Azul is our new Associate Editor. She will be handling any and all Facebook events, maintaining our presence on the Facebook Group Page, and hunting through Facebook updates for news items to share with the community. If you have ideas concerning Facebook, or news items you’d like to see in the In the News section of the weekly wrap please send them to estrella.azul@fridayflash.org or contact her via Twitter.

The Behind the Scenes Heroes
The Tech Team are the folks at FFDO who make everything here work. Right now they are working hard on upgrading the Collector so that more of the drudge work of creating the report can be automated. We have other big plans for the future and the tech team will be the ones that make it happen. These folks really are my heroes.

Susan Chambless has been my personal tech guru for years and is a personal friend. Susan is the technical team lead here at FFDO. When I come up with a crazy idea it’s up to Susan and her crew to figure out how to implement it.

Angie Capozello stepped up to the challenge without hesitation. She knows PHP and does web design work by day. She is currently researching various WordPress add-ons to improve user user friendliness and overall functionality.

Tim VanSant also jumped in right away. He has experience with web design and PHP and unbridled enthusiasm. He set up (or fixed) most of the sidebar items and is currently investigating database issues as we move to a more service oriented environment.

There you have it. We’ve assembled a great crew here at FFDO, and hope to bring many exciting new features your way in the near future. If you have any ideas to improve the site, or notice an issue that needs immediate attention, please don’t hesitate to contact the Tech Team , Tigerteam@fridayflash.org. It will reach each of us on the team (Olivia, Estrella, Susan, Angie, Tim, and me) thus ensuring someone will see it relatively quickly. Also feel free to leave a comment below.

Genre Word CloudWe had 54 stories this week with 2 debuts. Please welcome Zachary Tringali and Luke Raftl to the ranks of Friday Flash. Drop by, read their debut stories and leave a comment when  you have a moment. Special thanks to Susan, my technical guru, who closed out all the entries in the collector this week. I hope you like the new home of Friday Flash and feel comfortable kicking around the joint. We’ve built this place for you, the Friday Flash community. Look for new features here over time as FFDO develops into a true community resource.

As always, if your stories are not in the list visit the Collector (which is still in the same place at least for now) and they will be added either later this weekend or in next week’s listing. Keep on flashing. Continue reading »
