Well, Serena, I don't think I was this organized when my kids were as young as your little sweetie. :) It's nice when they get old enough to help clean and pick up their things.

I have a desk in my bedroom that varies between piled the stuff to clean. For years I used it as craft storage, instead of a real desk, because I often work in the living room. With the end of the school year coming in a few weeks, I've cleaned off that desk in anticipation that I'll need to hole up in the bedroom to get writing done this summer. The best thing about that desk - it's a roll top. So if it does get too messy, I just shut the cover!

I find having my mother in-law over is a great incentive to clean up the clutter. :) She's one of THOSE people...the ones that barely leave a magazine or piece of mail in sight. Ever. Since I often write in the living room, accompanied by the clutter of being a writer, having a visit from my in-laws brings on a cleaning spree on my part. Good luck with your clutter busting efforts, Jon!

With its being positioned as it is, I hardly ever use my desk for writing.
I usually take my laptop to the kitchen table during the day, or to bed at night and write from there. The upside of this? My desk might be cluttered, but it's out of sight. And, the table and my bed don't get any clutter, unless you count decorative pillows as such ;)

When I do use my desk, though even when I don't, I do my best to keep it clutter-free. I'm a neat and tidy person anyway (with tendencies towards OCD in this regard), so for me, it works out well overall.

I am currently forced to go through the paperwork clutter just to make sure important things (like mortgage payments) get taken care of. My mountain is getting smaller, but just never goes away. My oldest daughter made the observation that some things just never get Done (with a capital D) such as dishes, and laundry because there are always replacements in the queue. Dealing with paper clutter is another such unending chore as the folks in the blue pants keep bringing more of it every day. But no mistake, a clean workspace helps with creativity and production, so I must try and do better.

Jon, I used to do the same thing. Let it go until the task of finding one piece of paper threatened to start a paper avalanche. My work area isn't always clean, well actually it's never really CLEAN, but I do try to go through everything every week or two. Sometimes you can even find some inspiration for a new project or story in those messy piles. :)

My writing space is a mess, and I agree, it does not benefit my writing. Things get to a critical mass, then I tackle it all at once until I end up with a more manageable mess, but the mess never really seems to go away. Perhaps more frequent and less frantic clean ups is the way to go.
